Supercore

Fun typography sign I found in South Williamsburg area. Supercore. I didn’t go in this time, but apparently it’s a Japanese cafe. I have to try next time! It seems like the Tokyo office is a motion graphic and design company and they opened a cafe in NYC. Pretty cool.

Ford + Forlano: Forth + Back

Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco is having an exhibition of jewelry, prints and paintings called “Ford + Forlano: Forth + Back” starting May 1st (oh my god, it’s tomorrow! May already?!) to May 31st. When I saw one of the images from their prints, I was so amazed and wanted to look more. I thought it was sensational! Interesting thing I found out is that the artisits, Steven Ford and David Forlano live in coast to coast, collaborating by sending unfinished work forth and back between them. So these prints (and all the other work, too, of course) traveled between Philadelphia and Santa Fe. You can read more from their website, but their work is truly a collaboration, that is how it takes their pieces to a next level. I wish I could go see this exhibition… if you are in SF, check it out and let me know how it is! Velvet da Vinci is an awesome gallery space, I miss going in there.

Here are some of their print work:

Head Hoods Poster

Spotted a poster for Head Hoods in Williamsburg. I’ve posted about their funny unique hoodies before so I knew what this is for, and I love their style, it’s cool and eye catching. Very simple, bold and funny.

Window Type

I was walking down on West Broadway in SoHo the other day and passed by the Anthropologie and noticed the window filled with types. The reflection makes it kind of hard to see, but these types were hand created by tapes, I think. I like that it’s not too visible and too strong, but you see it with the lighting from inside of the store.

Anthropologie always has cool displays indeed… I wasn’t going to stop by, but after seeing this window, I had to go in and look at more cool stuff :) Always a treat to just look around!

The Post Card

I also received a postcard for the Proceed and Be Bold film and this is going to be on my inspiration board for sure. I’m pretty sure Amos himself printed this postcard, it is letterpressed very nicely with wood types. Love the stars and the texture as it always gets me. I also love the chipboard, I am actually printing something on chipboard (will share it here soon) and my business card is also printed on chipboard so what not to love about this postcard! Perfect :)

I like this “post card” design, too.

Proceed and Be Bold!

Laura from Brown Finch Films contacted me last week because they featured my LWYL poster as a part of their etsy article, Proceed and Be Bold: A Documentary. I was so happy to hear that and of course I checked out the article and right then, I found out that the film is about a letterpress printer who quit his corporate job at the age of 40 to follow his dream of becoming a letterpress artist. I was immediately drawn by this film, this article, I thought I really had to watch this film! (see the traler below)

and over the weekend, I got the DVD (Thank you, Laura!!! You can buy it here.) and watched it – it was so great!! Amos’s work and his story are truly inspiring, very honest, very bold, it shows how much fun he’s having and how much he is just open to whatever he feels, thinks, and he is just creating and creating. There are a lot of interesting racial points, too, makes you think and rethink.

I enjoyed a lot because I don’t think I ever saw a documentary film about a letterpress printer and the press he was using looked the same, wood types, the tools… a lot of things were familiar to me. He brings his press (1000-2000lb!) to his street shop and let people try the press to print a letterpress poster – that is just amazing!! No one would ever do that except him! He is great. Full of life, full of energy, I could feel it through the film. I was inspired.

“Don’t be an artist. Artists are full of themselves. Just make stuff. Just quit your job or whatever you hate doing, and make stuff, damnit.” – Amos Paul Kennedy Jr.

Paint Chip Type

Good morning! A new week started. I hope everyone had a nice weekend. NYC was hot all weekend (80-90 degrees!) and it looks like it’s going to continue to be hot for a little more while :)

I was walking around williamsburg in Brooklyn this weekend found this type made out of paint chip! Of course it caught my eye and I thought it was a good found type post to start the week.

paintchip1

+ ART (? or + AP.T? – I think it’s ART)

paintchip2

– AD (this one’s clear)

These are right next to each other, but nothing else was on the wall or near the wall. How pretty it looks, the gradation of each color makes the type pop and gives a nice touch!

Have a great week everyone! xo

p.s Just in case you are wondering… this is what happened to me on last Friday. (bummer)

Friday Inspiration

Happy Friday, everyone! This morning, I came across this lovely image from my flickr contact *etoile* (oh, how I looove her photos… sigh…) and I was inspired by not only the image, but also this quote she put with the picture:

there are years that ask questions and years that answer.

questionanswer

~Zora Neale Hurston
*photo is from *etoile*

I thought it was beautiful. I think everyone can relate to the quote, I feel like I was asking myself lots of questions (still am) and I did get some answers – it’s good to ask questions because you get answers someday and I think it’s important and it’s a growing process.

I have a letterpress studio time today, but I am cutting down the time to go see Natalie Porman speak. Yes, you heard it right! Natalie Portman!! at SoHo Apple Store. (SUPER excited!!) They are hosting filmmaking events and workshops for the Tribeca Film Festival and she and CEO Christine Aylward are going to discuss their new web project. I hope I can take some pictures and share it here next week… we’ll see!

Wishing you all a happy weekend! xo

MoMA | Martin Kippenberger

One more post from my MoMA visit… Martin Kippenberger: The Problem Perspective. Just to be in the entrance area of this exhibition made me so excited – walls of great posters he designed for his exhibitions! Each one is so different and unique, my eye was so busy just to take in. I couldn’t take any photos inside the exhibitions, but you will find so many of his works including paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings, prints… lots of stuff. Lots of energy. It was cool.

I especially liked this hand-lettering poster for SF MoMA exhibition. Back in 1991.

It is going on until May 11th, if you are around in NYC, you should go check it out!
