Peter Callesen

With just a paper and glue, Peter Callesen creates these amazing art, from A4 Paper size to very large scale, I never seen a piece of paper comes alive like this.

I like that all his work is very conceptual and both the flat paper side and the 3D sculpture side have stories for each.

You can see a lot more of his work from here.

My Letterpress Prints

Here is my favorite work from the first class. Lot of different Hs and a few ampersands and dollar signs and printed twice in different way. I love the overlapping part, makes different red and gives different shapes.

This one had less ink and a little different red and I like the texture this one has!

Letterpress Class 1

I had such a fun time at my first lettepress class last Thursday. I could have kept printing all night long!

Here, I’m gonna briefly explain what I’ve learned with pictures I’ve taken during the class. This was the first class so it was an introduction to letterpress, how to set type using wood types, and how to print by using Vandercook Press.

So many wood types! I love the big ones:

We started picking up letters that you want to print.

It’s so fun just looking at them.

And then, we use these

and these to set type in the Vandercook so the type won’t move around while you are printing. You need to measure the empty spaces and get the perfect ones to go along – lot of math, lot of eyes, it is like a puzzle, too.

On the press. When you set the type, you also tighten from the side and the bottom by using the tool:

It is hard to work with mirrored letters, actually, the instructor suggested that you use mirror and make sure it reads right.

When you are ready to print, you put ink on the roll, and go back and forth to have the letters inked.

Vandercook Press. You set the paper and grab the big handle and just roll…

and you have your letterpress prints!

Here, I printed twice by just moving a little bit so it overlaps:

Other pretty letterpress prints on the wall:

Can’t wait for next class!

SFGirlByBay

Heart Fish got a big press today! On wonderful sfgirlbybay.com! I am so honored and so excited, thank you, Victoria! I’ve worked with her in San Francisco at an ad agency called Heat (formerly Black Rocket) for quite some time… and we shared a lot of laughter together with our boss and coworkers, had lunch together (she made this big delicious salad for everyone for a while and it was the best salad ever!) partied together, worked late nights together… I miss those days all the time.

Anyway. Victoria has been such an inspiration for me as you can imagine. Not only she has been so supportive and caring, but also she has lots of great ideas, she knows a lot about designs, very resourceful, creative, and she is so FUN to be around! Joanie Bacon (she also worked with us then) and I always talk about her as “the most famous person we know” – she has been in lots of magazines and newspapers, her blog is in everyone’s everyday reads, and she was just on the show on TV, and she is in the Apartment Therapy book, too! I had to get my copy:

I’ve been to 3 of her places a few times, it looked always amazing – I remember when she just moved to this place, on the night of the moving day, her place looked already amazing and she said she could have a dinner party! Now, that is a talent and a passion!

Oh, and I am more than thrilled to get to help her on her new blog design, it is going to be a fun project and it’s just so great to get to work with her! Thank you again, Victoria!

Letterpress Display

I came across this vintage letterpress shadow box display at Etsy and I thought it was such a cool display to do! I sometimes pick up old wood type letters at flea market here and there, but it’s just laying around the house so I might try this idea! You can get more letters at Angie Pea store, too.

And…. I am starting a letterpress class tonight! I have been wanted to learn more about letterpress for so long and I am finally doing it! I am so excited, I will report about my letterpress experience for the next 10 weeks here so please check back and see how I’m doing.
